Rupf Collection: Picasso, Gris, Klee

In Paris, the art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler (1884–1979), who represented painters such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Fernand Léger, and in Bern (Switzerland), the merchant Hermann Rupf (1880–1962), who sold belts, buttons, gloves and fine scarves, and later zips, in his haberdashery: the close friendship between these two very different men let to the creation of the unique Rupf Collection in 1907.
It is unique because it offers an exceptional insight into the artistic avant-garde, especially the early development of Cubism.
The friendship between the two men survived the darkest periods of the 20th century. This is reflected both in the outstanding artworks that the Swiss collector was able to acquire from Kahnweiler and in their lively, deeply personal correspondence, which is also included in the show.
