Eurasian otter

Otter

(Lutra lutra)
The reintroduction of the Eurasian otter into the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Nature Park, a pioneering project in Catalonia, began in 1995. Today, this species, which is commonly found in Mig de Dos Rius (Between Two Rivers), has gradually returned to most rivers in Catalonia. The Eurasian otter is a reliable indicator of the state of conservation of a river ecosystem.

Flora and vegetation

Mown meadows

Mown meadows

This is the main habitat in extensive spaces but is quite rare in the Empordà plane; it is rich in graminaceous and leguiminous plants. The orchids that blossom in the springtime are extraordinarily beautiful protected species.

Riverine forest

In the midst of the regeneration process, it includes elms, narrow-leafed ash, willows, alders and poplars, and it is the habitat of the lesser spotted woodpecker.

Even though reeds are more abundant, this species traditionally used to make chairs and other items can also be found here.
