The Nutrition course from the Mad for Science programme of the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation, is a course developed by the Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge (HUB) in collaboration with the Alícia Foundationaimed at 1st year A-Level students with a scientific vocation interested in STEM careers. This course was created with the idea of introducing the multidisciplinary environment offered by nutrition and dietetics where different disciplines converge to solve problems related to health. The main objective of this course is to foster scientific vocations and promote the knowledge and education of excellence of young people in Catalonia.

Registration for the Nutrition course of the Mad for Science programme will be open from 15th September to 25th October 2021 and among all those enrolled there will be 25 students selected from the 1st year of A-Levels who will participate in the 3rd edition of the course within the 10th edition of the Mad for Science programme that will take place in 2022.

The course will be held on different Saturdays from 15th January 2022 to 26th November 2022 at the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) facilities, as well as at other collaborating centres such as Alícia Foundation.

During 16 theoretical-practical sessions, students will learn about research in the main areas of dietetics and human nutrition in a hospital context such as malnutrition, myths and legends, etiology of obesity, eating disorders, psychological and neurophysiological evaluation procedures, therapeutic and prevention alternatives, among others. In addition, they will be able to participate in practical workshops on nutritional support, critical analysis of existing diets, observe patient testimonies, learn about evaluation instruments, experiment with procedures based on new technologies, etc.

Specific objectives

Academic studies

  • To promote among young people scientific vocations related to the world of dietetics and human nutrition, helping them to guide their academic and professional future.

Research

  • Bringing students closer to research on nutrition and human dietetics, contemplating specific conditions such as nutrition in patients with different diseases, hospital malnutrition, obesity and eating disorders.
  • Know the functioning of research centers related to nutrition, obesity and eating disorders.
  • Know the operation of the research associated with the excellence research network on the Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition, CIBERobn, and on Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM), ISCIII, Barcelona.
  • Experimentation with standard assessment instruments in obesity and eating disorder research (psychological, neurophysiological, neuropsychological, neuroimaging). Practice in correction and interpretation of results.

HUB:

Two hospital dietitians, who are part of the research team of the national multicenter study Predimed Plus, will give the presentation on basic nutritional knowledge, healthy eating habits and the importance of physical activity. They will also present the Mediterranean diet and do research on the Mediterranean diet (Predimed Plus study).

The theory will be accompanied by practical exercises (self-assessment of eating habits and physical activity). They will also present Predimed Plus witnesses who will talk about their personal experience as participants in the study.

Fundació Alícia:

Theoretical-demonstrative part:

Dietary and nutritional recommendations, by a nutritionist-dietician from Fundació Alícia, on how to carry out a good, healthy and sustainable diet. The theory will be accompanied by a culinary demonstration by a chef from the foundation, where you can see easy, fast and healthy preparations for the day-to-day life of the general population.

Practical part:

Design and culinary preparation of a menu adapting it to the general recommendations for a balanced diet explained in the theoretical part. Practice that will be done in a group and that will have to be defended before the experts of the Alícia Foundation and the rest of the Mad for Nutrition students.

Module 2. Diet therapy in special situations and in different hospital situations.

HUB:

Professionals from the Diet and Nutrition teams and the hospital's Endocrine service will address the issues of myths and legends in nutrition, diet therapy in special situations and different diseases, and hospital malnutrition: detection, assessment and interpretation through different procedures. The etiology of obesity, dietary-nutritional, psychological, pharmacological and surgical treatments will also be discussed.

The theoretical part will be complemented with illustration of clinical cases and workshops such as interpretation of nutritional labeling or measuring body composition, among others.

Fundació Alicia:

Theoretical-demonstrative part:

Dietary and nutritional recommendations, by a nutritionist-dietician from the Alicia Foundation, for each of the pathologies to be worked on, accompanied by a culinary demonstration by a chef from the foundation, where you can see elaborations specially designed for each situation.

Introduction to the generalities of current hospital nutrition and, more specifically, approach to diets with modified texture in these centers. Explanation accompanied by a culinary demonstration specially adapted to the established recommendations. This part will be taught by a dietitian-nutritionist and a chef from Fundació Alícia.

Practical part:

Design and culinary preparation of a menu adapting it to the needs of a typical individual who will have raised previously in a practical case. Practice that will be done in a group and that will have to be defended before the experts of the Alícia Foundation and the colleagues of Locos por la Nutrición.

Module 3. Eating Disorders

The most current aspects of eating disorders will be reviewed, working from clinical issues associated with diagnosis and early detection, risk factors and maintenance behaviors, treatment and prevention, to international research. The usual treatment techniques as well as the interventions based on new technologies will be presented.

On a practical level, patient testimonials will be presented. Functional neuroimaging techniques (such as electroencephalogram or magnetic resonance imaging) will be seen and manipulated and new technology devices will be used that are used as additional treatment tools in eating disorders and obesity ("serious games" or applications to control impulsivity and promote relaxation).
